Kangchenjunga – Darjeeling

Third highest mountain in the world is Kangchenjunga with an elevation of 8586 m in a section of Himalayas called Kangchenjunga Himal. Meaning of the ’Kangchenjunga’ is ‘Five Treasures of Snows’ as it contains five peaks and four of them are over 8450 m. two of the five peaks are in Taplejunga District, Nepal and other three peaks  main, central and south are on border of North Sikkim and Nepal.  kangchenjunga is located on the boundary between Nepal and Sikkim. It is also called Sewal Ungma in the local Limbu language.

It is one of the famous attractions among tourist and is situated in Darjeeling. Kangchenjunga was assumed to be the highest mountain in the world till 1852, but based on measurements made by Great Trigonometric Survey of India in 1849 came on conclusion that Mount Everest was the highest. In 1856 it was officially announced that Kangchenjunga is the third highest mountain.

It was first climbed on 25 may 1955 by British peoples Joe Brown and George Band. They stopped of the summit as per promise given to Maharaja of Sikkim that the top of mountain would remain inviolate.

Kangchenjunga is the official spelling accepted by Douglas Freshfield, A. M. Kellas and the Royal Geographical society that indicates the Tibetan Pronunciation. There is various alternative spelling which includes Kangchen Dzonga, Khangchendzonga, Kanchenjanga, etc but the final selected word is Kangchenjunga came from his Highness Sir Tashi Namgyal, the Maharaja or Chogyal of Sikkim.

Most famous views are from the hill station of Darjeeling. Darjeeling War Memorial is the most visited places from where Kangchenjunga is observed.  Sikkim people admire Kangchenjunga as a sacred mountain. Goecha La trek is achieving popularity amongst tourists.

Kangchenjunga is arraying from just a few hundred meters beyond sea point among some of the greatest peaks of the Himalaya and is the small state of Sikkim hiving amazing diverse landscape. This trek exceeds through heavily forested small valley and tea estates to hilly grasslands below Kangchenjunga.  In this total 23 days trekking tour the visitors fly from Delhi to Sikkim.

In reality, rock and ice falls more often thunder this apparently serene mount. There are not any direct routes to the mount. One has to try various indirect routes, possibly starting by ascending any one of five peaks, then finding any place for camping, attempting the summit.  The trekkers return to their home with unforgettable moment of their trekking.

Tiger Hill Sunrise – Darjeeling

Darjeeling is one of the attractions in India and having lots of places to visit and enjoy nature of beauty. Tiger hill is one of the famous tourist spot in Darjeeling. It is a summit of Ghoom, highest railway station in Darjeeling.  It is famous for its beauty which offers Mount Everest along with Kangchenjunga.  It is 11 km from Darjeeling and is the best place to spend holiday. Majorly famous for tea plantation, rich flora and fauna and cold weather, the hill station proudly boasts on her nickname ‘Queen of Hill’.

Amoung the various attractions in Darjeeling, tiger hill are certainly on top ten spot of the holidaymakers. People want to see sunrise at this place when they are in the hill station. the first ray of sun shoot ahead and shed light upon twin peaks of Kangchenjunga  painting it pink and then bathing it in a beautiful orange color. This awesome view can be enjoyed early in the morning at around 4 am from tiger hill and is well known as sunrise point.  You will need to start by 3:30 am so that you reach by 4:15 am. Sometimes as you reach close to the summit, particularly during high season there would be a huge queue of cars lined up. Hundreds of tourists come here every day for enjoying this awesome view.

From here Mount Everest is just visible, tweeting out through two other peaks standing by its side.  Kurseong is also visible to the south on clear day and in the distance, along with Teesta River, Mahanadi River, Balason River and Mechi River twisting down to the south.

Darjeeling weather can be change anytime. Fog and the mist come from nowhere and put a white blanket all around. In fact looking at the weather and the sky in Darjeeling there is no indication of how the weather may be at tiger hill. In this area cloud and fog lie at various levels of mountains, so no one can guarantee a perfect sunrise view from Tiger Hill.

Trekking

There are two approaches at Tiger Hill for trekking.

1)      Tensing Norgay road from chowrasta mall area is free from motor traffic, leads through villages of Toong Soong and Aloobari. This route goes through tea gardens and through Allobari Monastery, and then finally meets with the hill Cart road at Jore Bungalow. Tiger hill is 5 km climb up from here to the top and takes 2 hours to climb.

2)      Gandhi road goes via forests area and lots of rhododendrons on the way.hill cart road meet to Gandhi road at Ghoom area from where climb to tiger hill starts.

This area is now a part of nature reserve and maintained by DGHC (Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council). Such a wide beauty of tourism in Darjeeling, attracts lot number of travellers from all over the India, and so increases the demand for best category ‘2 Star Hotels in Darjeeling’.
