Chail Wildlife Sanctuary – Shimla

Himachal Pradesh is believed to be the place for honeymooner, couples, nature lovers and adventure tour and it’s true. But it is also famous for wildlife sanctuaries which are one of the major attractions in Himachal Pradesh. These sanctuaries attract nature lovers from across the country which contains various species of animals and birds in their natural habitat.


Chail Sanctuary is located at Chail in Shimla which forms the golden triangle with Shimla and Kufri of Himachal Pradesh. It is about 63 km from Shimla and is one of the well maintained wildlife sanctuaries and houses having rich collection of flora and fauna. Some of the most seen animal species are European red deer, wild boar, goral, spotted deer, sambar, common langur, Himalayan black bear, flying squirrel, Indian porcupine etc.


With the animals this park is also home to various birds. Chir pheasant and Khalij pheasant are most popular birds seen in this sanctuary. It also includes golden eagle and grey headed flycatcher flying in the sky. Large number of pine trees are also founds here.


Apart from this wildlife, this park can also allow in adventurous and leisurely activities such as trekking, angling and bird watching. Out of these angling is a popular activity undertaken in Gaura River. Many trekking trails pass through this sanctuary. Kandaghat-Chail, Chail-Shimla via Junga, Chail Rajgarh etc are most popular trails that passes from this park. This park also contain breeding centre situated in blossom and Jhajiha is a popular place to visit by tourists in this sanctuary.


This park is spread in an area of 110 square km. Chail wildlife sanctuary was identified in 1976 and was declared as a protected area under government consideration. In 1988 Chir Pleasant breeding and rehabilitation program has been launched.


As per history Chail wildlife sanctuary once served as the hunting ground of Maharaja of Patiala Bhupinder Singh. He was founded in this hill station after banished from entering Shimla following his elopement with daughter of Lord Kitchener of British Indian Army Commander.


Chail wildlife sanctuary is opened through the year but the best time to visit at this place is from March to October.  According to people, this sanctuary having the record of visiting large number of honeymooners and explore them to natural beauty. This forest covers more than 10 k hectares of land with thickly covered Oak forest, Deodar tree, Solang Valley in Himachal Pradesh.
